Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about starting your tax business with Sure-Fire.
Getting Started
Do I need my own EFIN to start?
No, you do not! You can start preparing returns immediately under our partner EFIN. We can also provide guidance on applying for your own EFIN, and you can easily transition to it once it's approved, all within the same software.
Do I need any certifications or licenses?
You will need a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) from the IRS, which we can help you obtain. Some states have additional requirements for tax preparers—we can advise you on your specific state's requirements during onboarding.
Software & Returns
What is Taxwise and what returns can I file?
Taxwise is a leading professional-grade tax software trusted by thousands of CPAs and tax firms. The software we provide is the "Power" package, allowing you to file all 1040 (Individual) and all state returns.
Can I file returns for clients in all 50 states?
Yes! All of our packages include the ability to file federal and state returns for all 50 states. There are no additional per-state fees or limitations.
Support & Training
What kind of support is included?
All our plans include fast, in-house technical support for the Taxwise software. Instead of calling a large, generic call center, you'll reach our team directly. Our Platform plan also includes "adaptive coaching," which is one-on-one mentorship from a senior tax pro to help you with tax law questions and complex returns.
What is "adaptive coaching"?
Adaptive coaching is our personalized mentorship approach included in the Platform package. A senior tax professional works with you one-on-one during your first tax season, reviewing your returns, answering questions, and building your confidence with complex tax situations. The coaching adapts to your specific needs and skill level.
Pricing & Fees
How do I choose between the 80/20 split and the $35 fee? (Partnership/Accelerator)
We give you the choice! The $35 flat fee is often better if your average return price is high (e.g., $300+). The 80/20 split (where you keep 80%) is often better if your average return price is lower, or if you're doing many simple returns. You can choose the model that is most profitable for your business.
Are there any hidden fees or annual costs?
Absolutely not. Our pricing is 100% transparent—the price you see is the price you pay. There are no hidden technology fees, no surprise service bureau charges, no franchise royalties, and no confusing fine print. We believe in complete honesty about costs, which is why so many tax professionals trust us as their partner.
Can I upgrade my package later?
Yes! Many of our partners start with the Platform package and upgrade to Partnership or Accelerator as their business grows. Request information about upgrade options and pricing.
Building Your Business
How do I get clients?
While all our partners are independent business owners responsible for their own marketing, our Accelerator plan is designed to solve this exact problem. We build you a professional website, set up your Google and Bing local listings (so people find you when they search "tax preparer near me"), and provide professional marketing materials to help you build your brand.
What bank products can I offer my clients?
Through our bank product integration, you can offer your clients refund transfers, refund advances (up to $5,000), and other financial products. These let you compete with national tax chains and provide added value to your clients. Unlike some providers, we don't charge hidden "service bureau" fees on these products.
Do I need to form an LLC?
While you can operate as a sole proprietor, many tax professionals choose to form an LLC for liability protection. Our Accelerator package includes LLC formation guidance to help you through the process. We recommend consulting with a legal professional for advice specific to your situation.
